Project Profiles: Achieving High-Impact Results

A national health educators group

Doug worked with the board of directors and the executive team of a national health educators association to plan and carry out a day-long retreat that proved highly effective on several fronts. Participants fashioned preliminary values and vision statements, explored strategic issues and opportunities, and identified ways to strengthen the board's governing capacity. (For more information, see Doug's blog posting, Advancing by Retreating.)

A Western school district

A public school district, located near a popular resort destination in the West, identified a need to update its governing processes and structure, calling on Doug to facilitate and manage the task force assigned to the project. The assignment involved building a set of design assumptions to guide task force deliberations, preparation of the draft proposal, and an in-depth strategic work session with the entire board.

A national group purchasing association

When a national group purchasing association identified a need to update and streamline its governance systems, it started by arranging an executive committee work session to update its vision and values statements. With Doug's help, a nonboard task force was asked to provide input on the drafts at two carefully facilitated work sessions. The board's new Planning and Business Development Committee further refined the vision and values statements which the full board eventually adopted.

A regional community development partnership

A community-development partnership engaged in a variety of economic development programs for a growing city in the Southeast asked Doug Eadie & Company to help guide and develop a governance improvement program. The group wanted someone with in-depth experience in working with diverse nonprofits and community-based economic development clients, strong facilitation skills and the presence to lead task force members through complex meetings and deliberations. Doug helped guide the task force's work flow, including research, interviews, and facilitation of several half-day meetings-all leading to a completed Action Report and presentation for the organization's board.

Children's services agency

A respected agency that serves children with mental disabilities recently sought Doug's help in defining a concrete governing mission statement. The elements of the five-part statement had been hammered out in a special retreat, then augmented and polished over a period of weeks by the Governance Task Force that ultimately recommended its adoption to the full board. The statement defines the specific role of the board in achieving the mission of the agency. It serves too as a guide to mapping out governing activities and processes and assists the board in assessing its own performance. Read the full story here.

"Doug helped us plan and conduct a board-staff retreat that was exciting, fun, and productive from beginning to end, and the positive impact is still being felt."
